Finding creative purpose through nature.

Nature Inspires Our Purpose

I have always found that the best place to jump start my work, especially creative work, is to spend time in nature and let my mind rest so that the work can be done in my subconscious and have a chance to incubate. Since I am a poet, one of my creative outlets is poetry. I have piles of it from over the years and haven’t really shared it with many people and I’ve been thinking about doing so lately for some reason. So, I decided to start sharing some of them here, one by one. This is a new blog and doesn’t have a readership yet, but I thought it might be fun for me to share my prose here anyway. Just for my own pleasure!

Here’s a favorite one I wrote long ago about nature and how it moves me. Enjoy!

nature
stirs my blood
and makes me
feel
very warm.. (the same way you do)

this night
it’s the stars
and the expanse of the universe
folding me into it’s arms
soft fingers
tresses of light
caressing
encircling
filling
me
in playful repose
with the desire
for more… (the same way you do)

I drink in
the smell
of the earth
newly moved
hear
the sounds of our
machines..

..man moving nature
tearing
down
then building
essential need
changing
disrupting
old
to create new.. (the same way you do)

how I love
this winking sky
intoxicated
spinning
stars of mine
cast this wish
into that
vast
and perfect place
for….

..tonight
this is
the wine of life
aged to perfection
yet distinctly new
and every last drop
tastes just
the same
as the delightful
first… (the same way you do)

Tiltology: We contain multitudes within us…

“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.” ~Walt Whitman

A colleague of mine introduced me to this beautiful quote last summer and I immediately loved it because my creative purpose is about helping people see the complexity, and yet also simplicity, of creation within them. The potential that lies within us is astounding. Our ability to see things from many points of view grows as our intelligence grows. And the polar opposite occurs as well: As we grow, our decisions get easier and we value the simple things in life much more…
